This Weekend: Three important art shows

Expo Chicago

The fifth International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Art at Chicago’s Navy Pier, known as Expo Chicago, opens Sept. 22 with VIP parties and is open to the public Sept.23-25. More than a mere showing of works from 140 galleries across the globe, the fair showcases special exhibitions from art institutions and organizations and has panel discussions. There are also unusual suspended installations as part of IN/SITU.

stARTup Art Fair

For an interesting indie art fair (no gallery representation) go to stARTup over at the Mile North Hotel in East Superior Street. Instead of mounted in the usual art show venues, startup uses hotels. The artists and their work move into the hotel room where they stay for the weekend. Pluses are intimate settings, one on one discussions with artists and a chance to see art in a room situation that might be similar to one at home. The fair is in town concurrent with EXPOChicago. About two years old, the fair partners with local non profits. In Chicago partners are DFBRL8R, Hyde Park Art Center, Roots & Culture, LVL3 – Inside\Within – The Arts of Life,  Michelle Grabner and New American Paintings. stARTup is also in LA and San Francisco.
